Let's Talk About the Logitech K780 Keyboard

Published November 24, 2021

I think I finally found my perfect keyboard. It’s the Logitech K780. After many years and many keyboard purchases, I am satisfied and I think I can finally stop searching, testing, and buying keyboards (not to mention returning those that didn’t fit the bill).

Logitech K780

Here’s What I like about the Logitech K780

  • Tactile: As a touch typist, the K780 keyboard (Amazon affiliate link) is a dream. The shape and feel of the keys are a perfect match for my fingers. The touch is soft.
  • Quiet: There’s not much to say regarding the sound. I currently have no less than 10 keyboards (yes, I have a problem) and this one, by far, is the quietest. There’s one more that’s a little quieter, the silicon keyboard, but it’s not wireless and is only PC compatible.
  • Bluetooth: Logitech’s K780 pairs with 3 devices. This is convenient, but not yet practical for me. I’m able to connect it to my PC, iPhone, and iPad. This is convenient when I’m testing and contrasting PC/iOS apps. The trick is remembering which device I’m connected to. The last thing I want to do is hit the enter key and inadvertently send a text/message I had not intended to send.
  • Number Pad: Having the number pad to the right of the keyboard is convenient. It’s not an absolute necessity but does come in handy when working on spreadsheets.
  • Device Compatibility: The K780 is compatible with the Mac and PC. I’m still learning the iOS keyboard shortcuts, but having a keyboard that works with them both is a plus.
  • Battery Life: This keyboard’s battery life is advertised as 24 months. I purchased this keyboard on September 27, 2020 (almost 14 months ago as of this writing) and I’m still using the same batteries as were in it when I bought it.

Nice but not Necessary

The K780 has a cradle in which to rest devices. It doesn’t work for me because the Otterbox case for my iPhone makes it too bulky to fit in the slot. And, I wouldn’t think of inserting the iPad in the slot.

Logitech K780 Downside

The keyboard is large so portability is awkward. It’s 14.9” long by 6.2“ wide. I much prefer a keyboard about the size of the iPad to make travel easier. That’s why I ended up purchasing the Magic Keyboard. Although, at home, I still use the Logitech with the iPad. With the Magic Keyboard stand, I can sit the iPad on a tray table (better angle for my head and neck) and place the Logitech on my lap. A better ergonomic setup.

Why Didn’t I Stop There?

Stop Buying Keyboards

Well, I didn’t stop there because I started writing this post a little over a year ago. Back then, prior to purchasing the Magic Keyboard, I wanted a smaller, more portable keyboard. Enter the Logitech K380 (Amazon affiliate link).

Thinking the K380 was just a smaller version of the K780, I ordered it. It had all of the K780 features minus the side numbers pad so I ordered it.

Expecting the same experience, I was sorely disappointed. So much so that after 15 minutes of working with it (and having more typos than I’ve ever had), I packed it up and shipped it back.

It was loud, heavy and the tactile feel was off. The keys were hard plastic. I tried putting my silicone keyboard cover to improve the tactile feel, to no avail. It was nothing like the Logitech K780 so I was back at the drawing board.

Fortunately, as I mentioned earlier, I bought the Magic Keyboard for the iPad and it has everything I want. I am putting my keyboard addiction to rest. The search is over.
