I can’t believe that I’m actually thinking about buying a PlayStation 5 console. I’m sure you’re asking, “Why is this grandma thinking of buying a PlayStation 5? She’s not a gamer”. I’ll tell you why. It’s because I am intrigued by some of the PlayStation games. And my partner in crime, my grandson, has repeatedly mentioned his desire for Spiderman 2. Honestly, I thought we had Spiderman 2, but that was the Miles Morales version. What do I know?
I am not a gamer, but I do enjoy playing Spyro and Crash Bandicoot with the kids. I’ve also become a fan of Freddy Spaghetti, Crazy Chicken, LUMO, Armikrog (what a weird game), and the POWGI word games. Our PlayStation 4 console was the star of the show on New Year’s Eve when the family got together and “busted a move” with the Just Dance game. It’s a lot of fun.
Video Games for All Ages
My young granddaughter is growing into her own when it comes to controlling the characters and understanding how to navigate the games. She also gets a kick out of Freddy Spaghetti, so we play it together.
Initially, when my kids were young, I didn’t warm up to the idea of game consoles. However, when I finally did buy one, I bought it with games that required lots of movement. DDR Max was the go-to movement game (that was a PS2 game). We put a hurtin’ on that dance pad.
However, when my cronies come over, I slow things down for the older folks. I pull out the old Wii console. Yep, old folks like bowling and golf. At least it gets them off the couch.
PlayStation 4 vs. PlayStation 5
These consoles are not cheap, but I’m a Low-Tech Grandma. I like technology, so I’m willing to shell out the cash for them. Plus, I can get the whole family involved in game playing. Cell phones get put away, and off we go. That alone is worth the investment.
PlayStation 5 comes in three flavors. There’s the traditional console with a disc drive, a digital console without a disc drive, and the Slim. Sony listened to the complaints from gamers about the consoles being too bulky and came up with the Slim PS5. I’ve also heard that the Slim is cheaper for Sony to make, and that’s probably why the Slim is here.
Which PS5 Flavor to Buy?
The digital console works for me since we don’t swap discs with other gamers. When I was a PlayStation newbie, I purchased disc games. Over time, as I became more familiar with the platform, I ordered games through the PlayStation site and downloaded them. However, having the disc drive wouldn’t hurt. It would allow me to play some PS4 games on the new device. The price difference is about $50, so I won’t quibble about the extra $50.
Am I really going to do this? I’m sure you can answer that question.
