Apple Notes for Movie/Game Cataloging

As simple as Apple Notes is to use, I just can’t seem to wrap my brain around some of the features. I watch videos of people using Apple notes for a host of things. They also add tags and smart folders and can sort things. For some reason, fully utilizing the Apple Notes app has escaped me.Apple Notes Confusion

When I have a difficult time with a concept, I tend to go back to the drawing board and start from the beginning. Apple Notes is a great note-taking app, so that’s what I do. I use it to take notes. On occasion, I scan documents  to save to files or scan receipts to keep track of household maintenance. However, smart folders have eluded me.

Apple Notes Helping with Cord Cutting

I recently dumped a host of streaming apps in favor of Apollo TV. Additionally, I added a PS5 to the mix. Now, how does Apple Notes help me with the transition? I’ll tell you. You know how the Home screen for streaming apps shows upcoming movies, TV shows and recommendations? Well, Apollo TV doesn’t do that. So, I’ve got to keep my eyes and ears on alert for when new movies or TV programs are available for streaming. Similarly, I keep my senses at the ready for new family-appropriate games for Playstation.

Apollo TV

Having Apple Notes available for quick note taking has helped me to build a “database” of movies, TV shows, and video games. Whenever I see something I might want to watch or allow my grandkids to play, I jot down the title. With movies, I also jot down the year. Some movie remakes are better than others, so having the year makes finding the right movie easier.

Organizing Notes with Spreadsheets

Over time, my list of movies and games became extensive. Having random and disorganized notes didn’t work so well. So, I gathered the notes and created two Excel spreadsheets, one for movies and the other for games. I then copied and pasted the alphabetized spreadsheets into separate notes. Having a spreadsheet allowed me to delete duplicate entries.

Adding new entries to the note is simple. I tap the 3 dots to the left of the line I where I’d like to insert a new line and then enter the title.

Adding an Entry

I still use Quick Notes for the spur-of-the-moment movie/game title. Once a week or when time permits, I update the spreadsheets with the random quick notes taken during the week. I get rid of the quick notes to avoid confusing myself and cluttering Quick Notes with old items.

Updates and Changes

Over time, I’m sure I’ll want to update or change things in the spreadsheet. Fortunately, I can copy and paste the spreadsheet from Apple Note into Excel and make the necessary changes. At the MoviesI think I’ll enter commentary about the movie and whether I liked it or not. The commentary will help to avoid watching a movie at a later date and saying, “I think I saw this before.” It’s a rare occasion when I want to watch a movie more than once.

Apple Notes Features

With Notes, it’s easy to share lists with friends and family. Who knows? Now that I know how to catalog movies and games, maybe I’ll learn some of the other Apple Notes features and put them to use better. In the meantime, I’m happy with my little “databases.” 😊
